The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic lay organization whose mission is to build a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need. St. Peter’s members currently serve the poor of Lexington in several ways.
- We assist poor families by supplying them with food and/or clothing vouchers. The names are taken at a call center located at Christ the King Cathedral and the vouchers are distributed in one of two ways. The ideal way is for two members to visit the home of the individual, listen to their needs, offer prayers with them, and hand deliver the vouchers. Since COVID, the vouchers have had to be mailed rather than presented in person.
- To request assistance, call 859-266-8003 on Mondays and Wednesdays only between the hours of 9:30-11:00 a. m. Daily assistance is very limited. If you don’t get through on the phone line, please try another day.
- The society also operates a small self-supporting grocery store for low-income senior residents of the Connie Griffith-Ballard Towers housing complex in downtown Lexington. Members stock the store with groceries, and then sell them for a minimal amount to cover the expense of re-stocking.
- Our members have also supplied the homeless population with bags filled with essential items like gloves, socks, and food items.
- Another activity the members are sometimes involved with is supplying Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to needy families.
