- Celebrating the sacrament of Baptism
After Jesus was raised from the dead and before he ascended to His Father, He commissioned His disciples by giving them this mission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28: 19-20a). By the Roman Catholic faith, which we profess, we are commissioned in the same way to baptize and thus build up our Church.
- Preparation for Baptism
Submitting your child’s birth certificate is a requirement. By submitting your child’s birth certificate, final decree of adoption (if applicable), Pre-Baptism Class Certificates for parents and godparents (if class not taken at St. Peter) you will help our wonderful team to make it a great experience for you and your child. Note: We do not accept online baptism course certificates.
- What You Need To Know About Godparents
The godparents are present to profess the Church’s Faith, in which the child is being baptized. Therefore, in order to be appointed as godparent, the person must be suitable for this role and have the intention of fulfilling it. Only one godparent is required, but two may serve as sponsors as long as one is a woman and the other a man. Sponsors are expected to be able to lead by example, to support the child’s faith development, and to assist the parents in their task as the primary educators of their children in the faith. Therefore, for the good of the child, godparents / sponsors must be:
- Fully initiated in to the Catholic Church by Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion
- A registered and active member of a Catholic parish responsibly and joyfully living their faith
- Married in the Catholic Church, if married (note: married godparents / sponsors do not need to be married to each other)
- At least 16 years of age and demonstrating the maturity to accept this responsibility
Godparents who are members of St. Peter parish are asked to attend the baptismal prep course—with the child’s parents, if possible. Godparents from other parishes must supply in advance a letter of suitability from their pastor (this is typical and most parishes are able to issue these letters quickly upon request).
